Equality has always been a contentious subject. Is it simply a myth, or is it something we truly need for a better world? Let’s look at both sides. Some argue that full equality is impossible because of deep- rooted historical and cultural prejudices. For ages, civilizations have been structured by hierarchies based on race, gender, and class, making it difficult to bring in true equality. Despite win in civil rights, structural racism and gender inequality remain major challenges. Furthermore, people naturally have varied talents and abilities, therefore it is illogical to expect everyone to end up in the same area.

Economic disparity is another major hold back to equality. Wealth is unevenly distributed over the world, with a small proportion of the population possessing vast amounts of resources. As an example, the richest one percent possesses more than half of the world’s wealth. Critics contend that capitalism is one of the reasons of inequality, therefore ultimate equality may be a just an unfulfillable dream.

However, many people feel that equality is necessary. First, everyone is entitled to equal chances and respect. Justice and human rights depend on ensuring that everyone has equal access to resources and opportunities in life. Equal access to great education, for example, has the potential to break the cycle of poverty and benefit entire communities.

Equality also promotes social stability. Societies with fewer disparities frequently have less conflict and crime. Promoting equality may build unity and reduces conflicts. Countries like Denmark and Finland have lower wealth disparity and better levels of social trust and safety. There is also an economic case for equality. When people have equitable access to education, healthcare, and opportunity, they are better able to contribute to the economy. Gender equality in the workplace, for example, may contribute $12 trillion to global GDP by 2025.

While absolute equality may be out of reach, working towards a more equal society is essential. Addressing historical injustices and speaking up for inclusive policies can result in a society where equality benefits everyone. Let us work towards a future in which equality is more than just an idea, but a reality that benefits everyone.
