So, your afternoon was just ruined with pretty much everyone's Instagram feed shouting that Poonam Pandey is apparently alive. You visited www.poonampandeyisalive.com and were either inspired & empowered to read up and talk about cervical cancer, or you just want to know what the heck all this is about. Well, you’re at the right place.

Good day, wonderful people! Let us discuss cervical cancer today, a subject that is sometimes not given enough attention or other times, when it receives the wrong kind. I'll tell you what, though. Regardless of how you and everyone else got to know about it, cervical cancer deserves a day. A day for awareness. With the January that just passed being Cervical Cancer awareness month and 4th February being World Cancer day, let’s declare emphatically that we will not be silent about this cunning adversary (In the meantime, let’s not raise any dead bodies, shall we?).

Let's examine this in further detail. You know the unwanted guest in your cervix, just like the unwanted news in your social feeds the past few days? Yeah, that’s cervical cancer. And what invites this unwanted guest? HPV, a virus. A virus, just like the ones that make you sneeze for weeks. The only catch though, HPV may go completely unnoticed until it has invaded the entire area.

A certain “celebrity” tried to come swooping in like a superhero, bringing with her a miracle drug to cure all. Sadly for her, the only thing resembling a superhero in her story is The Marvels’ box office release. And we all know how that story went. So, let’s do it the right way, shall we?

Vaccinations are one of the weapons in our arsenal. The HPV vaccine is one’s best defense against the papillomavirus strains that cause cervical cancer. This resembles the beginning of an actual superhero tale, with science coming to the rescue. The only twist? While this vaccine is revolutionary, not everyone has easy access to it. We need to make sure this vaccine reaches all corners of the world.

But, as much as tablets and syrups can cure a cold, sometimes, the best thing to do is wear a mask and prevent it from ever happening. Similarly, it’s time to discuss screenings. Consider them the firewall to your computer browser. HPV testings and routine Pap screenings detect any early signs of cancerous activity in your cervix. Your chances of a good ending increase with an early diagnosis and treatment.

They say that any attention is good attention. Sure, Poonam Pandey faking her death to push a message is a bit extreme. However, it did start a conversation. It made a significant number of people search up cervical cancer. It made Poonam Pandey’s website crash due to the traffic. Heck, it made you click on this article. But, it shouldn’t take someone to scream wolf to get them to pay attention. Clickbait shouldn’t start being the reason people start caring about their lives. Cancer is real, and so are its effects. And as real as that are survivors of cancer who've beaten all odds. It’s not about waiting for social media publicity stunts for you to reevaluate your life. Sometimes, it's about becoming the protagonist of your own tale.
